Health Fairs
To complement the outstanding services that patients and visitors receive at Kuakini, the Kuakini Health Care Team provides a number of services at community events such as the Great Aloha Run Health and Fitness Expo and First Hawaiian Bank PrimeTime Wellness Fair. Health educational activities and screenings are also provided on-site at schools, businesses and community organizations.
During these year-round events, Kuakini offers its Healthful Lifestyle Promotions which includes free health information, brochures, health screenings, healthy recipes, educational activities and tips on healthy living. The program educates the community about healthful lifestyles and reinforces the importance of practicing good health habits. The Healthful Lifestyle Promotions also emphasizes an awareness of health-related issues and encourages people to participate in educational opportunities and free health screenings being offered by Kuakini. These activities enable the community to become aware of their personal health status and take better care of themselves, especially if they are in a high-risk group.
Aside from health fairs, Kuakini also holds an annual Open House on its campus for two days in May. The Open House is geared toward students from Kindergarten through High School and allows these students to get an up close, first hand look at the different departments and professions in a health care organization. Every year, about 1,500 island-wide school students get an opportunity to view surgical procedure videos, see X-rays and actual lab specimens, participate in rehabilitation and sensory activities, learn how to eat right and take care of themselves and see the dangers of smoking. Highlights of the Open House include a hand-washing activity and going inside an ambulance and a medevac helicopter.

Community Service
Part of Kuakini's mission is to improve the health status of the community by providing community services such as health education. By making people more aware of their health and by providing information, Kuakini can assist the community in being more health conscious.
Kuakini provides many types of health screenings including computerized breast cancer risk assessments, prostate cancer testing and glucose/cholesterol testing. Kuakini also performs simple tests at many community health fairs, including body composition analysis, carbon monoxide screenings and pulse oximetry readings.
Kuakini's Health Care Team members are a resource for many schools, business and professional groups and community organizations. Physicians, nurses, Medical Social Workers and other health care professionals at Kuakini have given presentations on such topics as nutrition, sleep disorders, medication, proper hand washing techniques and stress. Kuakini's staff have provided public lectures on breast cancer, drug interactions, diabetes, advance directives, heart disease and stroke.

Other community service activities include blood drives and employee donation drives to help local charities. Since 2000, the Kuakini Health Care Team has been "adopting" two to four public school teachers each year and has provided school supplies for their needy students.
Each month, Kuakini hosts tours of its facilities for visitors from the mainland and foreign countries such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as specialized tours for local students, businesses and community organizations.
Kuakini also provides educational forums for other community health care professionals and offers its facilities for receiving live, satellite teleconference programs from organizations such as the American Hospital Association.
