June 3, 2010
Kuakini Health System (Kuakini) has received a $5,000 grant from the Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc. which will help fund Kuakini’s year-round “Healthful Lifestyle Promotions” program. The program features educational community health events that focus on healthful lifestyles and reinforces the importance of practicing good health habits.
The funding from Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc. enables Kuakini to provide free educational materials and health screenings at several major community events including the Great Aloha Run Sports, Health and Fitness Expo; First Hawaiian Bank Primetime Wellness Fair; Kuakini’s annual Open House for students, as well as Kuakini’s 110th Anniversary Celebration on July 17.
The interactive and educational activities enable the community to become aware of their personal health status and encourages them to take better care of themselves. Informational topics include nutrition, exercise, smoking, cholesterol, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, heart disease, stroke, sleep hygiene and infection control.
Since 1998, Friends of Hawaii Charities Inc., through a charity partnership with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, has distributed more than $10 million to over 350 Hawaii charities. Each year, funds are raised through a variety of events, including its signature event, the Sony Open in Hawaii PGA Tour tournament.
