Collaborative Partnerships and Joint Ventures

In an effort to provide comprehensive health care services to the community at reasonable cost, Kuakini Health System has collaborated with other health care providers and business partners. Participation in these joint ventures has enabled Kuakini to maximize its resources through savings on equipment purchases and operating costs. All of the partners share in the capitalization and risk and rewards of the joint ventures. Kuakini is currently involved in nine joint ventures, which is the largest number among the Hawaii hospitals:

Diagnostic Laboratories Services, Inc. Pacific Radiopharmacy, Ltd.
Hawaii Credential Verification Service Premier, Inc.
Hawaii Health Information Corporation United Laundry Services, Inc.
Hawaii Residency Program, Inc.

CareResource Hawaii (non-profit) - A joint venture between Kuakini Support Services, Inc. and The Queen's Medical Center to provide home health and private duty nursing services on all islands. CareResource Hawaii was formed through the merger of Kuakini's former home health agency (Kuakini-At-Home) and Queen's former home health and private duty nursing agencies (Comprehensive Home Care and Comprehensive Home Services of Hawaii). Currently, CareResource Hawaii is the largest home health agency on Oahu.

Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (for-profit) - Provides clinical reference laboratory services to hospitals, physician offices and other health care organizations as well as contracted services for hospital laboratories. DLS offers the most sophisticated forensic toxicology and substance abuse testing services in the State of Hawaii. Currently DLS is the largest reference laboratory on Oahu. Kuakini Development Corp. (with 10% ownership), The Queen's Development Corporation and The Queen's Medical Center are partners.

Hawaii Credentials Verification Service (non-profit) - A joint venture formed by Kuakini Medical Center, The Queen's Medical Center, Wahiawa General Hospital and Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), to offer centralized verification service to hospitals, managed care organizations, health insurance companies, and related organizations. The service helps physicians and other health care professionals through the use of a universal application form and standardized verification processing for medical staff  membership and privileges at participating organizations.

Hawaii Health Information Corporation (non-profit) - Provides data collection and analysis of health care costs, demographics, and market trends for participating health care organizations. The partners include the Healthcare Association of Hawaii (of which Kuakini Medical Center is a member), Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Hawaii Medical Association, and Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA).

Hawaii Residency Program, Inc. (non-profit) - Provides graduate medical education and training programs for a number of specialty areas. Partners include Kuakini Medical Center (Geriatric Medicine, Hyperbaric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery); Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program (Geriatric Medicine, Orthopedics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Surgery); Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children (Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery); The Queen's Medical Center (Internal Medicine, International Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychology, Surgery); St. Francis Medical Center-Liliha (Internal Medicine, International Medicine, Pathology, Surgery); Hawaii State Hospital (Psychiatry); Straub Clinic & Hospital Inc. (Surgery); Tripler Army Medical Center (Surgery); Veterans Administration (Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry); and Wahiawa General Hospital (Family Practice). The partners oversee the programs and utilize UH faculty and private practice physicians and other health professionals in the training of over 200 medical residents at participating hospitals and clinics.

Kuakini PHO dba Kuakini Health Network (non-profit) - A joint venture between Kuakini Medical Center and over 180 physicians to form a physician hospital organization (PHO). The purpose of the PHO is to provide a vehicle to contract and deliver health care services under various managed care health insurance products. The corporation is equally owned by the Medical Center and the physician members.

Pacific Radiopharmacy Ltd. (for-profit) - Provides radioactive drugs to several hospital nuclear medicine departments for patient diagnostic procedures and treatments through group purchasing of radioactive pharmaceutical supplies for participating providers. Kuakini Medical Center, The Honolulu Medical Group, The Queen's Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center-Liliha, and Straub Clinic & Hospital Inc. are founding partners. Established in 1976, Pacific Radiopharmacy is one of the first joint ventures in the country.

Premier, Inc. (non-profit) - A national cooperative/consortium owned by over 200 non-profit, health care organizations/systems of which Kuakini is an owner/member. The consortium provides group purchasing, networking, benchmarking, outcomes management, research, and other collaborative initiatives which help Kuakini improve its operations. Membership in Premier enables Kuakini to continue its pursuit of excellence in health care, community service, education and research. The consortium represents one-third of the U.S. community hospitals (with 818 hospitals owned/managed/leased by Premier owners and over 928 affiliated hospitals) and one-third of the total acute hospital beds in the U.S.

United Laundry Services, Inc. (for-profit) - Provides laundry and linen rental services to hospitals and hotels on Oahu. Kuakini Medical Center, Hawaii Pacific Health, Kyo-Ya Co. Ltd. (owner of Sheraton Hotels), Outrigger Hotels Hawaii, St. Francis Health Care Enterprises, Inc. and a private laundry operator are equal partners in this company.
