- Kuakini's Nuclear Medicine Department acquired a new VERTEX Gamma Camera System in November of 1995. The system enhances Kuakini's ability to perform single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) imaging procedures. The VERTEX offers increased versatility by allowing clinicians to use camera angles from 90 to 180 degrees. The robotic controls and ability to pre-program the position of the detector heads dramatically reduces patient set-up time.
SPECT imaging allows physicians to evaluate the physiology, rather than just the structure of the brain, heart, skeletal system and other organs.
The SPECT gamma camera and computers produce two-dimensional or three-dimensional images of many internal organs and accurately measure the internal distribution of radioactive tracers to evaluate body functions.
