Grand Prize Winner

Congratulations to Dr. Samina Ahsan for winning the Grand Prize for her photo, Old is Gold.

Judges Comments:
• Queen’s Theatre was an 850-seat theater built in 1936. It’s screen has been dark since the mid-1980s. The photo is simple but it touches, for me, memories of going to King Theatre downtown and watching the movies there in the late 1950’s.
• Very clever framing. Nice use of power lines as a compositional element. It would be a very nice black and white print. Very artsy, and literal at the same time.
• This image is understated but the more I looked at it the more I appreciated it’s timelessness and pictorial qualities. The phone lines, old theatre marquee, light fixtures, and decaying paint suggests a bygone era. The muted colors and intersecting lines kept my eyes looking. I can imagine this running as a double truck (large horizontal photo) in a magazine. Well done.
