Research Programs at Kuakini

Kuakini Medical Center has gained local, national and international recognition for its biomedical research. Since 1965, Kuakini has engaged in collaborative research efforts that have involved National Institutes of Health (NIH) entities including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Aging (NIA), and National Cancer Institute (NCI).  Through its participation in scientifically sound and ethical research, Kuakini has built an extensive track record of contributing to the NIH’s initiatives of promoting human health and addressing unmet public health needs.  Kuakini has a rich research history in the areas of cardiovascular disease, brain aging (e.g., dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease), cancer, and clinical trials (e.g., cooperative group protocols and drug studies) for oncology and geriatric patients.

Kuakini research programs and projects have produced over 500 scientific publications.  These findings have benefited research participants and their families, enhanced the quality of Kuakini’s health care services and community service efforts, and contributed to the NIH’s promotion of human health. Kuakini’s research programs have brought in over $72 million in federal funds to Hawaii since the 1960s.

Kuakini appreciates the unselfish contributions of the research participants and their families in volunteering their time and providing valuable information and specimens to advance Kuakini’s research initiatives and to benefit the Hawaii community.
