General Information for Researchers

Kuakini Health System is a nonprofit corporation that operates for charitable, research and educational purposes to support and encourage social, human, health and medical care services. The subsidiaries under Kuakini Health System include:

  • Kuakini Medical Center - a licensed, 212-bed acute care teaching hospital accredited by the Joint Commission. Kuakini is the home of the internationally recognized Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program, Kuakini Japan-Hawaii Cancer Study, and the Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study. These and other Kuakini research studies have resulted in numerous contributions in the areas of coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke and dementia.
  • Kuakini Geriatric Care, Inc. - a nonprofit organization that oversees geriatric care services which includes a 187-bed long term care facility, 34-bed residential care home (Kuakini Home) and two community based adult day care programs.
  • Kuakini Foundation - a nonprofit organization established to develop a broader base of community financial support to enhance the provision of quality health care services. The Foundation coordinates fundraising activities for the Health System including annual fund drives, special donor events, multi-year capital fundraising campaigns and endowment and charitable planned giving programs.
  • Kuakini Support Services, Inc. - a nonprofit subsidiary responsible for developing alternative sources of revenue and the development and construction of the second medical office building and second parking structure on the Kuakini campus.
