Tissue Samples

Kuakini research programs have collected various biological samples over many decades, which have been stored for future research use. Biological samples are available from the cohort participants in the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (HHP), Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (HAAS), and offspring studies including the Intermap Study, the Family Blood Pressure Program, the Pacific Genetic Epidemiologic Study on Aging (PacGen) Study, and the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program Study of Atherosclerosis Risk (HHP-STAR).  These studies have stored samples of whole blood, serum, plasma, buffy coat and DNA, frozen at -70 degrees.

The HHP-HAAS has performed autopsies on the cohort men, with the recent emphasis on brain autopsies for research in neurodegenerative diseases. The brain bank includes over 900 stored brain samples, along with paraffin blocks, slides, and frozen brain tissue. This rich database and the stored samples provide unique opportunities for new research studies about the genetic and environmental effects of various risk factors on chronic diseases.
