Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (HHP) Offspring Study - Kuakini also started the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (HHP) Offspring Study, which is designed to collect data (including demographics, health conditions, lifestyle and genetics) of the sons and daughters of the original Kuakini HHP participants. The goal of the study is to conduct multi-generational research on several diseases, health conditions, and healthy aging, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, age-related disability, memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, longevity, and related genetic research.

The Offspring Study has started with a small randomized sample of the children of the Kuakini HHP participants. In time, Kuakini would like to contact all of the offspring about their interest in joining the legacy of research initiated by their fathers’ commitment to the Kuakini HHP.
Kuakini HHP STAR (Honolulu Heart Program Study of Atherosclerosis Risk) - a study about atherosclerosis in middle-aged men of Japanese ancestry, who are offspring of the original participants of the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program. It is an international collaborative study that is part of the ERA JUMP (Electron-Beam Tomography, Risk Factor Assessment Among Japanese and U.S. Men in the Post-World War II Birth Cohort) Study, which studies calcium in coronary arteries and other signs of potential future heart disease and stroke. The study includes comparisons with Caucasian men in Pittsburgh, Japanese men in Shiga, Japan, and Korean men in Seoul, Korea. Two examination cycles have been completed, and a third is in the planning process. Recent findings indicate that Japanese-American men have more calcium in the arteries of the heart than anticipated.
Family Blood Pressure Program (SAPPHIRE - Stanford-Asian Pacific Program in Hypertension and Insulin Resistance: Genetic Determinants of High Blood Pressure) - a collaborative study with Stanford University School of Medicine and three hospitals in Taiwan to search for genes linked to high blood pressure in populations of Asian ancestry, especially those genes linked to potential diabetes.
Kuakini PacGen Study (Pacific Genetic Epidemiological Study on Aging) - a study to develop a network of experts in genetics, epidemiology, geriatrics, biostatistics and environmental science, to conduct studies of the genetics of healthy aging and longevity, among men of the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program longitudinal cohort and their offspring. Sons and daughters of the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program were examined for measures of physical and cognitive functioning.
International Study of Macronutrients and Blood Pressure (INTERMAP) - Blood pressure is a very important risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Previous studies have established that salt, alcohol intake and body mass index (or weight) and a low intake of dietary potassium are associated with higher blood pressure levels. The INTERMAP study was designed to clarify the association of specific nutrients on blood pressure levels. The study included 4,680 men and women who were ages 40-59 from 17 diverse populations in China, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States. The INTERMAP Hawaii Center recruited a population of over 260 Japanese Americans who were sons and daughters of the participants of the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program which is based at Kuakini Medical Center.
INTERLIPID: The Relationship of Diet to Blood Lipids & Coagulation Factors in Japanese in Hawaii and Japan - an ancillary study to INTERMAP being carried out with the six Japanese INTERMAP centers to obtain blood specimens (not part of the INTERMAP protocol) and study the relationship of blood lipids and fibrinogen to diet in Japanese living in Japan and Hawaii. Study participants are the offspring of participants in the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program and Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study.
