Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation Services assists patients reach their highest functional potential and independence in daily living activities through physical, occupational and/or speech therapy. Services are offered in an inpatient setting, as well as part of Kuakini’s Total Joint Replacement Program.

Physical Therapy helps restore a patient’s mobility by improving overall strength, balance, coordination and range of motion. Through the use of specialized techniques and therapeutic exercises and activities, the Physical Therapy staff helps patients engage in safe transfers, improve their ability to walk or use a wheelchair, climb stairs and increase stamina. The staff therapists assess the patients and their need for specialized equipment or devices that may be required to improve safety and independence.

Occupational Therapy uses self-care techniques and purposeful activities to help patients increase their independent function, enhance development and prevent disability. Services provided by the staff include self-care training, arm/hand rehabilitation and task/environment adaptations to maximize independence and quality of life. The therapists teach patients energy conservation techniques, assess the patients and their need for adaptive equipment/devices and provide appropriate rehabilitation to address factors, which may prevent the patients from performing daily activities.

Speech Therapy assists patients with swallowing and communication disorders. The therapists evaluate patients with swallowing difficulties and provide training in techniques and exercises to assist them with safe swallowing. The staff also assists patients with other aspects of communication.

Therapy Types:

  • Physical Therapy helps restore mobility by improving the patient's overall strength, balance, coordination and range of motion. Through training and the use of specialized manual techniques, exercises, modalities and equipment, the staff helps patients regain their highest functional level in mobility and physical activities.
  • Occupational Therapy helps patients restore function for optimal participation in activities of daily living such as work, school, family, community, and leisure activities. Exercises and activities help patients improve their strength and stamina, increase dexterity and coordination, improve visual perceptual skills and become more independent in self-care skills.
  • Speech Therapy assists patients with swallowing and communication disorders related to stroke, head trauma and other neurologic conditions or surgical procedures. Therapists provide training and exercises for patients with swallowing problems to assist them with safe swallowing. For patients with communication disorders, therapists work on comprehension, memory and cognition, voice and enhancing communication.
