Kuakini's New Technologies Provide More Patient Comfort and Safety

Kuakini Medical Center installed a new nuclear medicine imaging system that provides more comfort for patients while maintaining the same high quality images that enable physicians to make accurate diagnoses of diseases of the brain, heart, other organs and bones.
The new GE Discovery NM630 scanner incorporates advanced Elite NXT detectors that offer SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) resolution and exceptional contrast for clearer images.  It reduces patients’ exposure to radiation by 50% and the imaging time from 18 to 10 minutes. The machine’s multi-axis movement makes scans quick and efficient while the real-time, infrared-guided automatic contouring enables precise and accurate scanning, regardless of the patient’s body type or physical limitations.
Other recent additions and upgrades in the Imaging Services department include:
  • An Ultra Low Dose GE 64-slice CT scanner with new Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASiR) technology, which dramatically reduces the radiation dose to the patient by approximately 50% while achieving the same sharp image quality.
  • A new Faxitron biopsy/specimen X-ray machine, which reduces the wait time for biopsy results from 15 minutes to one minute.
  • A new additional Ultrasound suite, which helps expand the scheduling of ultrasound procedures and allows the staff to accommodate an additional 10 or more patients each day.
  • An in-office PACS/Cerner access, which allows physicians to instantly and remotely transmit and retrieve patients’ images to and from Kuakini’s Imaging Archive.
  • Improved MRI scan protocols and upgrades in software, which help produce better image quality.
For physicians who need to obtain pre-authorization, the Imaging Services department has also set up a new Insurance Pre-Authorization Service that is available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For forms and questions regarding this service, call Imaging Services at 547-9545.
